There are some guys who grow hair like a gorilla. Let's be honest, no one likes to see a hairy back at the pool or beach. For us guys with back hair, what are the options - shaving our backs, waxing the back hair, or perhaps even getting electrolysis hair removal and getting rid of it permanently. I have been shaving my back on and off for several years and thank god it's not that bad. My wife sometimes will help me since it's not easy seeing what is going on back there. I had a regular trimmer for shaving my beard or facial hair and so I used that on my back hair and it did a pretty good job. Chest hair removal is another problem for some men and even a few women. There are shaving tools and hair removal products that will help you if you have similar problems with your body hair. The Philips Norelco BG2020 Bodygroom Shaver is a basic tool, while the MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver is more practical and easier to use on places that are hard to reach. I have heard of men getting their entire backs waxed at the salon, but that sounds too painful and I wouldn't even consider doing my chest that way. Bodybuilders are pretty much forced to do something with any back hair they might have as competitions call for a clean shaven body so their muscle definition shows off. The real question is just which products work the best and are they worth the money. We found some great reviews for top back shaving products on Amazon with real customer feedback and honest opinions on all types of products. Other websites like Shavingstuff.com and Folica.com list products with ratings and have owner reviews where possible. Amazon is the best source since they carry all the leading products and have the feedback necessary to make the best buying decision. The most important thing to look for in any back hair shaver is the ability to reach your back. The Mangroomer and Razorba are the only 2 tools we have found that do a decent job of this. You'll need a shaver that can shave at different angles and get them trimmed properly. No need to worry about ingrown hairs. A common concern we hear repeatedly is - Will my hair grow back thicker and faster if I shave my back hair? The answer is no - based on a study done by the folks at the Mayo Clinic a while back. Hormones are more likely to cause the growth of hair on your body than anything else - not by shaving too much. You can see the top selling back hair shavers online here. Best Back Hair Shaver: The best shaving tool for getting unwanted hair on your back is the MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver which is lightweight and features a fully extendable handle that will lock into position so you can easily reach all places on your back. The cutting edge blade will shave you close and leave smooth results. It's considered one of the few do it yourself back shavers that actually works and it's painless. At less than $40, the Mangroomer back shaver is the way to go and it works on more than just your back. Many men find the neck hair grows back much faster and more noticeable after a haircut so they need a way to trim it down while in between haircuts. The Mangroomer works wonders on neck and chest hair as well. It only takes a few minutes to use this electric back shaver and get rid of back hairs and other hair on your body. You can find the best pricing online at Amazon.com. Top Rated Back Shaver: Another popular back hair removal product is the Razorba Back Hair Shaver which sells for less than $30 on Amazon. It's nickname is the "War Hammer" which is fitting for the purpose it serves. The ergonomically designed shape allows you to easily reach your back and shave off the hair. You can put in your favorite razor and replace them easily when they become dull. The hassle with shaving tools like this is that you still have to find a way to get shaving cream or gel onto your back. It turns into a 2 person job in most cases and therfore limits the effectiveness of the Razorba. Most owners are totally happy with the results, but others question how "easy" it really is to use. I have used the Mangroomer myself and I like the fact that it's electric like my regular electric shaver for my face and beard. The Razorba will give you a much closer back shave compared to the Mangroomer, but many people just want the hair trimmed down close to the back and aren't concerned with a really close shave. Traditional Shaver: We didn't want to leave out a regular electric shaver in our reviews. The Philips Norelco BG2040/34 BodyGroom 7100 is a very popular alternative to the Mangroomer or Razorba products. The BG2040 will let you trim and shave all parts of your body that are from your neck down. Great for back hair, chest hair, shoulders, underarms, and groin area. It comes with 3 attachments so you can trim hair to different lengths and you can use it wet or dry. The hypoallergenic foil is less irritable on sensitive skin. Reviews are extremely positive on this model and it's worth considering even if shaving your back with it will be harder than with the other 2 products above.

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Depending on the wavelenght of the IPL system that is used for laser hair removal, it can be very effective. If the wavelength is is the appropriate range, the light targets the pigment in the hair follicle deep in the skin. The light is attracted to the pigment in the follicle and heats it up and most-likely kills the stem cells in the bulge region of the hair follicle that make it possible for new hairs to be formed in the future. So, once those cells are gone, no more hairs can be made and you have hair-less skin! Thank you for your question. I'm going to answer this in simple terms so hopefully no one reading this will get confused. The targets of our laser treatments (the melanin of the hair bulb, the hemoglobin of blood cells, the water in our skin layers) absorb energy at certain wavelengths of light. When the target absorbs this wavelength energy, heat is produced and the target (and the surrounding tissue in some cases) is destroyed. Lasers use an specific infrared wavelength to provide that energy to the target. In the case of hair removal, the wavelengths of the infrared light usually fall around 700-1100 nanometers (nm). For example, alexandrite lasers use 755nm, diode lasers use 800nm, and Nd:YAG lasers use 1064nm. All of these will target the melanin in the hair and cause it to heat up and destroy the hair bulb. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) does not use a specific wavelength, but rather a range of wavelengths (e.g. 600-1200nm) to target the hair melanin. Both of these treatments target hair efficiently and effectively, and in the same exact theoretical way. You can feel confident going with an IPL or a dedicated wavelength laser for hair removal. Hope that explains it! IPL (pulsed light) is absorbed by melanin (chromophore) in brown or black hair causing a thermal injury (selective photothermolysis) to the follicles of actively growing hairs (anagen). IPL is a light based therapy which offers 40-50% reduction. It will thin the hair, but not really deliver permanent results. True laser is the better option offering 80-99% permanent hair reduction depending on what area of the body is being treated. An IPL, or intense pulsed light machine is essentially a very bright flashbulb. These machines are capable of producing a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, but more specific ranges of wavelengths can be chosen depending on the desired treatment. In general, IPL works by targeting particular colors with specific wavelengths of light that correspond to these colors. When flashes of light are driven into tissue, the light is absorbed by the cells that contain the colors that correspond with these particular wavelengths. For laser hair removal, wavelengths are utilized that will target the hair color, which can range from light to dark brown. The surrounding skin tissue, being lighter in color, does not absorb very much of the heat, and therefore remains unharmed. It is for this reason that it is difficult to perform laser hair removal on persons with very light hair or very dark skin. The wavelengths of light must be specific enough to target the hair without affecting the skin. Some machines are capable of doing this safely, while others are not.

Steps Method 1 Prior to the Appointment Avoid tanning and using sunless tanners for at least a month to prepare for laser hair removal. The skin should be as light as possible at the time of treatment. For this reason, many people choose to undergo laser treatment during winter. Apply sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 if you do need to spend time outdoors, and the area you wish to have hair removed by laser will be exposed to UVA/UVB rays. Refrain from plucking or waxing for at least 2-4 weeks prior to undergoing laser hair removal. Shaving is fine, but these other hair removal techniques can reduce the effectiveness of the laser treatment. Also, the hair should not be bleached. Shave the area that will be treated, as instructed during the pre-treatment consultation. This is usually a day or two before the appointment. The hair follicles should be visible, but it can be more painful if longer hair is present during the laser hair removal. Take oral antiviral medication or oral antibiotics if prescribed by your doctor. Clean the skin at the treatment site and leave it free of cosmetics, lotions and creams. If you apply deodorant, it will be removed prior to treatment. Method 2 During the Appointment Wear clothing that will leave the treated area exposed or is loose fitting. The treated area may have a soothing topical cream applied that you don't want to get on clothing. Tight or abrasive clothing will feel uncomfortable if the skin is sensitive after treatment. Expect the laser technician to apply a topical anesthetic cream or a warm compress prior to treatment. The technician may also shave the area. Put on the protective eyewear. Community Q&A Add New Question Can I remove my chest and abdomen hair by laser? wikiHow Contributor Those areas might be more sensitive than others, but you can still do it. What kind of protective eye wear is best for IPL hair treatments? Generally speaking, we advise wearing laser goggles as well as keeping your eyes tight underneath them. If you get too close to the eyes, just squeezing really tight may not be enough and could risk your sight. If the goggles are in the way, then ask your physician to put special eye shields into your eye. I have dark patches at my underarms. Will it remain if I get laser hair removal treatment? Laser hair removal will remove all the hair permanently. Will white hair be removed by laser? Yes. The color of the hair doesn't matter. Ask a Question If this question (or a similar one) is answered twice in this section, please click here to let us know. Tips Dark hair combined with light skin responds best to laser hair removal. When skin has dark pigments, it cannot absorb the light from the laser. Special lasers can be used on African-Americans, and topical treatments may increase the effectiveness of laser hair removal on people with gray or light-colored hair. Shave areas to be treated up to four weeks prior to first laser hair removal treatment. Warnings It is important to follow the laser hair removal pre treatment instructions precisely to ensure maximum effectiveness of the treatment and to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Complete hair removal on an area of the body is not likely in a single treatment. Hair growth occurs in stages, and laser hair removal only works on hair that is in the active growth stage. Hair reduction of 10-25 percent per treatment is a realistic expectation.

There are a few variations on this myth, with some people saying shaving also makes hair grow back darker, faster or coarser. For the hirsute among us, who long to be smooth, but fear making matters worse, relax. It's all totally untrue. Multiple scientific studies have shown that shaving hair—anywhere on your body—has no effect on the way it grows back. Illustration by David Humphries Where did the myth come from? It probably comes from the fact that when shaved hair begins to grow back, it lacks the natural fine taper at the end of the hair shaft that unshaved hair has, giving the impression of coarseness or thickness. As for it making hair grow back darker, as the new hair has not yet been lightened by the sun it looks as though it's darker, but given time, it will lighten up slightly. So there's nothing to worry about? Not really. Shaving is an effective short-term solution to hairiness. Of course, it only provides smooth skin for a day or so before the regrowth begins to appear, so many people opt for waxing, although this is quite painful. There are some new products on the market, such as Inhibitif, that can be bought over the counter. They are applied to newly shaved skin over several months and make the hair grow back even thinner and sparser than normal, to reduce shaving.

I can't believe I'm putting this out on the Internet. And at the risk of never getting a date ever again in this lifetime, here it goes: I shave my face. (Never thought, but alas!) To kick things off, no, I don't stand in front of the mirror with some Barbasol and a Mach3 and get to work. (I know some of you are envisioning a pile of shaving cream on my face.) In fact, no shaving cream is used at all. Let me explain . . . I grew up with blond lip hair. (I guess you could call it a mustache, but I try to avoid it at all costs.) I was horrified about it. As a teen, I didn't deal with terrible acne (that came later in life — yay hormones!) but instead was bestowed with a patch of blond hair on my upper lip. Sure, all gals have a little bit of fuzz on their upper lips. No big deal. But it wasn't peach fuzz — it was very noticeable. And I was ready to do whatever it took to get rid of my furry friend staring me in the face every morning. I tried every removal process in the book, starting with Nair. I ended up burning my skin, which put my upper lip even more in the spotlight. After banning the pink cream, I tried threading and waxing, only to have my skin break out in pustules. This deterred me from wanting to remove facial hair, so I went ahead and opted to bleach the sucker. Considering it was blond, that didn't help. At 18, I opted for laser hair removal. It worked okay, but then I went off to college and didn't finish my sessions, so the hair grew back. But one day in 2011, at the ripe age of 23, I'm perusing YouTube and see a video from Bachelor in Paradise's Michelle Money. She's a cosmetologist and posted a video about . Have you seen this woman? She's stunning. I can't imagine she deals with any type of beauty crisis, but she and her friends explained why shaving their faces was not only fun, but also necessary, and then they showed a tutorial. Seeing their fuzz scrape right off their faces led me into an online rabbit hole. I have to say that I disagree with the girls on one thing: if you have facial hair and it doesn't bother you, get on with your bad self. Removing facial hair isn't mandatory. For me, it was something I wanted but didn't think was possible. Was shaving my face an option? Would it grow back black? Am I about to secure the role as a bearded woman on American Horror Story ? (Time travel?) Scouring the Internet, I found that Kate Somerville was a proponent of facial shaving. You mean to tell me that the queen of clear, youthful skin is down with shaving shenanigans? She told Style.com that Elizabeth Taylor's cosmetic dermatologist disclosed that Elizabeth shaved her face, as did Marilyn Monroe and Cleopatra. It makes your makeup go on smoother, gives you a glow, and because it's a razor, you're physically exfoliating your skin — great for antiaging! Why do you think men look so youthful as they age? They shave a majority of their lives! Here's the thing: Facial shaving for women isn't news. In fact, dermaplaning is the fancier option that spas offer to help take off a layer of dead skin.

While there are many ways to remove hair from our bodies, to get rid of back hair represents a logistics problem. It covers a large area and unless you can dislocate your elbows and your shoulders while maintaining coordination, it’s just hard to get at. Some of the best, most permanent ways to get rid of back hair will involve the help of professionals and paying them appropriate sums of cash, but there are cheaper tools and products that can get the job done at home. You can use safe, FDA-approved methods that vary in permanency, price, and effectiveness in order to get rid of back hair. Back Hair Removal Costs Electrolysis will cost $50-$100 per hour, and a back will take around 100 hours. If you have a big hairy back, you’re going to spend several thousand dollars and a great deal of time and energy. But the back hair will be gone for good. Laser back hair removal. For a hairy back, you’re looking at $700 -$1000 dollars per session. Several sessions are usually needed, and then you may need yearly fix-ups. Waxing. Expect to pay around $50 at a reputable spa. Cost is repeated every couple weeks. Shaving. The Mangroomer ranges from $20 – $50 while the Razorba costs anywhere from $30 – $50. Depilatory creams. Products range from $5 – $30. Best Ways to Get Rid of Back Hair Shaving is a safe, cheap way to remove back hairs. You’ll probably be able to reach hair on your neck and upper back, but you’ll need a tool like the Razorba Back Hair Shaver (pictured) to get lower. Do not shave dry or when you’re sunburned. When finished shaving, it’s always a good idea to moisturize. You slather this stuff on your back, the hair turns to jelly, and you simply clean up the mess. It can be used to tame a thick coat of back hair before you switch to a back hair shaver. Some people are very sensitive to these products, so test on a small area first. Also, know that different creams are designed for different areas of the body – read directions carefully! You can order creams like Veet from Amazon. Waxing is a viable back hair removal option. Newer, soy-based waxes have made this method less painful than advertised. That being said, I recommend going to a reputable salon to have this done, especially if you’ve never waxed before. Waxing involves pulling hair up by the root, so it’s relatively long lasting (2-7 weeks). Done improperly, waxing can cause bleeding, ingrown hairs, as well as infection. You can try electrolysis. Who wants to pull out back hair on a regular basis? Not I. Not you. While electrolysis is expensive, it is the only FDA (and AMA)-approved way to get rid of back hair permanently. During electrolysis, an accredited practitioner (be sure they are) inserts a fine needle into the hair shaft. The growth center is then destroyed with chemicals or heat, leaving your hair sleek and sexy. Follow-up sessions are often needed. Laser hair removal is a good, semi-permanent option. This method is both less expensive (slightly) and less permanent than electrolysis. During a session (you’ll need a few) a laser passes through your skin and destroys the melanin found in the hair follicle. After several treatments, some people experience permanent reduced growth, but you will most likely need maintenance sessions yearly or bi-yearly. Laser back hair removal works better for those with light skin but dark back hair. Also you get treated with a laser. Welcome to the future! Alternative Options The Mangroomer. This electric razor gets high marks from its users (women too!). It combines all the advanced technology of a back scratcher with a basic electric razor. Pure genius. It’s ergonomical, easy to use, and it’s dirt cheap ($20 – $40) compared to electrolysis and lasers. This is a good mid-range option from Amazon. Sugaring. Proponents of sugaring maintain that it is far less painful and more natural than waxing, but it is essentially the same thing. Most sugaring recipes call for little more than sugar, water, lemon, and molasses. Moom, a popular commerical sugaring solution, is a good option if you’d rather not make your own. Safely Removing Back Hairs Hair removal is a huge industry that houses as many schemers and scam artists as quality products and services. The FDA is literally overrun with patents for new lasers and techniques; consumers would be wise to research well before dishing out the clams for electrolysis or laser back hair removal. For example, don’t fall prey to vendors selling “home electrolysis” kits.

Cost : $400-500 per treatment. Lasting Result : After all laser hair removal treatments are completed, results could be almost permanent, with touch-up treatments annually or biannually to maintain results. Expert Comments : "Most men utilize laser hair removal for the back, upper arms, and chest and most want it thinned out, not removed - something which lasers can easily accomplish, " says Goldberg. In fact, other than electrolysis, laser hair removal is the only hair removal treatment that allows for thinning, rather than complete removal. While the average man needs five to seven sessions, as men age, more hair grows, especially on their backs, says Goldberg. As such, touch-up laser hair removal treatments are usually needed on average once a year. Hair Removal Option No. 2: Waxing What It Does : Gone are the sticky, gooey, honey-based waxes of the past. In their place are soy waxes, a creamy lotion that's applied to skin, but adheres only to the hair. Strips of specially prepared cloth are layered over the cream. When the mixture dries, in just a few minutes, the cloths are removed (think of pulling off a bandage) and poof! The hair is gone. How Long It Takes : Anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more, depending on what's being waxed. Best For : Eyebrow shaping, unibrow, hair on ears and neck, legs, underarms, and arms. While waxing can easily be done in the genital area, it is painful, so you might want to try it on other parts of your body first so you know what you're in for. Cost: From $10 to $70 depending on what you need done. Lasting Result : About four to six weeks. Expert Comments : "If you've never had a waxing before, it's best to have it done professionally, though it's important to check with the salon first if you're looking for a full-body waxing - some do, some don't, " says Serniuk. And since waxing can lead to skin infections, it's important to follow advice on aftercare, which should include use of an antibacterial skin lotion for several days, she says. Interestingly, one study showed that men who had areas of their back waxed before undergoing laser treatment had better results from the laser treatment. Hair Removal Option No. 3: Electrolysis What It Does : Using an ultra-slim needle to penetrate each individual hair shaft, this system delivers tiny shocks of electricity to the hair follicle, killing the cells that actually make hair. Once a cell is gone, it's gone, so no hair will grow there again. How Long It Takes : Each electrolysis treatment is relatively short - from 10 to 20 minutes - but if you want a lot of hair removed, it could take up to a year of weekly treatments. Since each hair is treated one at a time, take a glance at the thickness of your "fur" and you'll have an idea of how long a commitment it will require. Best For : While electrolysis works for hair removal equally well on all areas, because of the time-consuming nature of the treatment, small areas are often a good place to start, such as brows and neck. If used for genital hair removal, a local anesthetic can help, though many men find treatment in this area to be very painful.
