Laser Hair Removal for Face

Say Goodbye to Embarrassing Facial Hair with Laser Hair Removal

Let’s face it, facial hair can be embarrassing, annoying and problematic for both women and men. And for many the embarrassment can take an emotional toll on your self esteem.

Facial hair growth can be attributed to ones ethnic background or it can be hormonally driven. While facial laser hair removal is done on the surface, its effects are felt everywhere, providing you a boost of confidence you’ve been seeking!

The Hormone Factor in Women

Many women have excessive facial hair ranging from a few unwanted hairs to a full grown beard pattern similar to men. Often this is due to a hormonal imbalance where the female body overproduces male hormone (testosterone).

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal reproductive problem in women of childbearing age and we see many, many women with this condition who come to us because of their unwanted hair.

Women naturally produce both male and female hormones. When women have higher levels of the male hormone it can lead to changes in the body such as:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles, missed periods or very light periods
  • Increased growth in hair on the face, chest/breasts, abdomen and back
  • Weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
  • Worsened acne, oily skin or dandruff
  • Thickened or darkened skin patches on areas of the body such as: neck, arms, breasts or thighs
  • May or may not have many small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) in the ovaries

Because of the hormone changes, women with PCOS are more likely to develop certain serious health problems. These include type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and problems with the heart and blood vessels. Women with PCOS often have difficulty conceiving (ability to get pregnant).

Medication is the most common treatment for PCOS, because they can effect and control the body’s hormone levels. It is important to note, however, that rarely do these medications effect the production of unwanted hair. The most common medications used to treat PCOS include:

  • Oral contraceptive pills, which contain a combination of female hormones. They can help bring hormones back into balance and reduce or eliminate symptoms
  • Metformin, a diabetes medication, has been shown to help with PCOS symptoms
  • Antiandrogens, medications that can help reverse the effects of male hormones. They help reduce hair growth and clear acne. They are often combined with oral contraceptives.

At WIFH, we see so many women diagnosed and undiagnosed with PCOS who come to us for facial laser hair removal. The hormones cause a male pattern of hair growth, which is why facial hair is such a common problem among these patients.

Some of these patients enter our office so timid and embarrassed by the hair on their faces, you can see how desperate they are to get rid of it. Often they have a “five o’clock shadow” by the end of the work day causing them to avoid evening functions related to work, or being social with friends and family.

During the course of their laser hair removal treatments, these women change so much. Not only do they have less facial hair, but you see their confidence and self esteem come back. They feel beautiful and more attractive.

African American Patients and Laser Hair Removal for Face

These patients typically have dark, thick, coarse hair that has the tendency to curl and cause ingrown hairs on various parts of the body.

These ingrown hairs cause uncomfortable bumps and skin discoloration which produces an almost disfiguring appearance often leading to infections (Pseudofolliculitis Barbae).

With facial laser hair removal, we are able to successfully make our patients bump free with a marked improvement in the discoloration, making the skin look so much better. See our photo gallery for many examples.
