The Science: Permanent Facial Hair Removal - ”Photothermolysis”

Lasers are a medical device which have changed and dramatically advanced the way we treat skin issues. The definition of a laser can help you better understand why your laser procedure is so safe and effective.

Lasers are an effective treatment for eliminating unwanted hair. This new technology was approved by the FDA in 1997, and uses a high-energy laser with a long pulse duration (such as a Yag, Ruby, Diode or Alexandrite laser).coolglide laser These lasers are designed to allow the laser’s energy to be absorbed by your hair’s melanin pigment, located in the deeper layers of your skin, while minimizing damage to the superficial layers of the skin. The advantage of this type of treatment is the selective damage of the hair, with no permanent damage to other parts of your skin and, therefore, the avoidance of scars or permanent pigment changes.

The laser energy heats up and damages only the hair, not your skin-thus permanently removing hair but NOT injuring your skin or other skin structures. As the laser targets melanin, lasers are effective at removing dark hair, not light hair.

The Solution: Laser & Intense Pulsed Light Treatments

Generally, a series of treatments, 4-8, provide the best results. The treatment sessions are spaced 1-2 months apart.Laser Hair Removal After the procedure, the treatment site is red for a few hours, but is considered no downtime. Besides applying ice on and off for a few hours, no further wound care is necessary.

At Coastal Dermatology, we own 3 laser hair removal devices. This allows us to select the most appropriate technology for your unique conditions, and thus safely and effectively maximize your results. The lasers used by Dr.Laser Hair Removal Duke can treat patients with any skin type, including tanned and dark skin, and is safe for both women and men.

Light of a specific wavelength targets the hair follicle, inducing permanent hair removal. Dr. Duke uses two different lasers for hair removal as each person has different types of hairs that need treatment. The 1064 nm laser is safe for darker skin colors.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

skin laserThis device uses a more broad range of wavelengths to target finer lighter hairs. Often, during a series of treatments, the originally dark thick coarse hairs either are permanently removed, or become lighter and finer. The IPL device better clears these types of finer lighter hairs.

Information from clinical studies has shown that in order to achieve the best possible outcome, patients should receive four to six treatments spaced four to eight weeks apart. To achieve the best results, it’s important that laser treatments are done at regular intervals, to ensure that each hair is treated in its “growth” phase - when the laser treatment will effectively eliminate it. Different hairs are in this growth phase at different times; therefore, it takes four to six treatments to adequately treat all the unwanted hair.
